The story of the flag goes back to 1776 when the East India Company's continental Colors were first adopted, the following year it was maybe Betty Ross, an upholsterer and flag maker who designed the first stars and stripes with a circle of 13 stars above a field of 13 red and white stripes. Over the years the stripes at one time increased to 15 and then returned to 13. Over 27 evolutions the stars increased to 50 by 1960 at the command of President Dwight D Eisenhower having been designed 2 years earlier by the 17 year old Robert G Heft as a school project.
